The Internet’s Money

Opportunities

Where the internet’s money doesn’t reach yet

In 118 countries, 3 or fewer of the 12 payment, account and payout providers we track will onboard a local business. Many of those places are open to stablecoins. That gap is the opportunity.

Who could close the gap

Stablecoin infrastructure reaches further than card rails

Anyone with a phone and an internet connection can already hold and send stablecoins in a self-custody wallet. What most gap countries lack is a regulated way to swap them for local money. These providers generally serve countries outside a published restricted list rather than inside an approved one. We have not confirmed each gap country with them, so treat these as leads, not answers.

Gap, with a stablecoin path

105

Businesses here are largely cut off from the global payment rails. The stablecoin rules do not rule stablecoins out, so stablecoin infrastructure could be the bridge, where the provider’s own checks allow it.

Gap, stablecoins restricted

13

Few traditional providers and restrictive stablecoin rules. These are the hardest places to get paid from abroad.

Thin coverage

9

Some global providers onboard local businesses, but choice is narrow and terms are often limited.

Comprehensive sanctions or provider exits mean no provider we track will serve businesses here.

How we decide

  • We count the 12 payment processors, global accounts, payout platforms and business banks we track that onboard businesses registered in the country, fully or with limits. Stablecoin infrastructure and card issuers are counted separately, because they are the possible bridge.
  • 3 or fewer is a gap. The stablecoin rules then decide whether the gap has a stablecoin path or not.
  • Countries we have not reviewed in depth only count providers with a published country list. Providers that serve most of the world, like PayPal and Payoneer, show as “not yet reviewed” there, so a gap may be smaller than it looks.
  • Know better? Every country page has an “Is this right?” button. How corrections work.
